Why Do You Want To Work Here?

In this video, Alicia Fairclough, Founder of EA How To, explains how to answer the common interview question... Why do you want to work here?

Why do you want to work here?

To get paid. Isn’t that why everyone wants to work here?

Even if it’s true, let’s not say that!

If you’re going for a job interview, you can be fairly certain that you’re going to be asked the question, why do you want to work here?

In this video, I'm going to give examples of how you can answer this question so that you can take them, make them your own and nail your interview.

Making them your own is important. If your answer isn’t authentic, it’s not going to be convincing.

Before we dive in, you should know that I’m making loads of career oriented videos and to keep up with them all, you should subscribe. While you’re at it, give this video a thumbs up so I know this is the kind of content you want to see more of.

Ok, so let’s get to it. The first key to answering the question, why do you want to work here is to understand why the question is being asked in the first place.

There is a reason for every interview question and the reason for this one is to determine if you actually want the job and are likely to stick around or if you just need the money right now.

Knowing this, you now know that your answer needs to convince the interviewer that you’re passionate about this specific role at this company and that you want to stay long term.

That means, you need to be enthusiastic about the company and the role.

You need to tell them why you find their company interesting. Specifically why. Show you did your research. Do they have an incredible reputation? Is there something about their company values that you find particularly appealing? Have they announced a major project that you want to be part of?

And you need to demonstrate your commitment to the company. This means talking about why this is the place to continue to build your career. Convince them you’re going to stick around.

Are you ready for 3 concrete examples you can use to answer this question?

Let me know in the comments, which answer you would go with - answer 1, 2 or 3!

Here goes…

Why do you want to work here?

I want to work with Stark Industries because this company is leading the way with the development of clean energy.

The pivot you did, going from developing advanced weapons and robotics to clean energy has been inspiring and it’s something I’m really passionate about.

I want to work with a company that not only believes in clean energy but is leading the way with developing it.

I’m very well connected in this sector. I’ve spent 7 years now developing my skills at Hammer and growing my network, and I believe Stark Industries is the place for me to bring all of that knowledge.

Why do you want to work here?

I want to work at The Dragonfly Inn because of your reputation as one of the top 10 employers in Connecticut.

I researched a lot of companies when considering my next move and your values really resonate with me. I’m not just looking for any role, I’m looking for cultural fit and this feels right.

The fact that you have such high employee retention tells me this is a great place to be and that’s what I’m looking for. Somewhere I can develop long term and continue to set the bar in terms of desirable companies to work with.

Why do you want to work here?

I want to work with Pearson because as someone who has been a customer for about 2 years now, I know how great your product is. I’ve been waiting for this exact position to become available and as soon as I saw it, I jumped on it.

Your leadership team has an exceptional reputation and it’s clear that you value diversity and inclusion because it shows in everything you do.

The Championships Campaign… and your Lindy promotion was ground-breaking. I absolutely loved it and I could see the quality in the work and I believe my work is at that level.

I want to be part of that. I want to work with a leadership team that gets it. That really lives and breathes the Pearson values.

I feel strongly aligned with this company and your vision and I would be so excited to be part of that.

So there you have it. Three examples of how you can answer the question, why do you want to work here?

I really want to wish you all the best with your upcoming interview. I’m sure you’re going to be fantastic and any company would be lucky to have you.
